John Hughes has served as Board Chair and President for The Coleman Foundation, Inc., he has been serving as CEO of the foundation since 1980. The Coleman Foundation is an independent, private, charitable foundation engaged in a range of philanthropic programs, largely in the Chicago and Midwest region. Current asset value is approximately $175 million. Approximately $85 million in grants have been approved since 1981. Core funding areas include; cancer care, treatment and research, handicapped housing/education and education programs, primarily in the area of entrepreneurship/self-employment.

A private, charitable family foundation engaged in a range of philanthropic programs, primarily for entrepreneurship awareness and education. Current asset value is approximately $6 million, with over $1 million in grant funds distributed to date.

Archibald Candy Corporation and Fannie May Candy Shops, Inc. Associated since 1959. Former part owner, Vice Chairman, Board Member, Chief Executive Officer, Chairman Finance, Data Processing, Insurance, Personnel, Audit and Compensation Committees and Past President of Archibald Candy Co. Served as Director, CEO, President and Vice Chairman from 1981 through 1991. As a manufacturer and retailer of high quality, fresh boxed chocolates and ice cream, the companies scope included 260 Shops located in fifteen states and over 2,500 employees. The combined companies had 1,200 wholesale distributors, programs in direct mail, quantity order, and retail distributors, manufacturing, production and product distribution. From 1981 through 1991, companies experienced growth in sales, earning and number of employees each year. The entire business was sold on October 31, 1991. There is no longer any association.

Accounting, tax and audit staff of casualty insurance and re-insurance company in Chicago.
Independent Contractor providing services as Director, Officer, Consulting and management services.
Board Member - various manufacturing, retail, banking, hospital, and non-for-profit organizations in Chicago area.
PAST PUBLIC ACCOUNTING EXPERIENCE: Spent early part of career with national and local firms as a staff accountant, auditor, tax manager, and management advisory and information services.
Became partner in a local firm with a staff of 20 in 1960; partner in a smaller firm 1958.
Formed own C.P.A. firm in 1969. General practice audit, tax, accounting, computers, information systems and management services. No longer in the firm having transferred it to partners in July of 1980. Firm continues in the Chicago area as John E. Hughes and Co., P.C.

Founded committee with two other C.P.A. through the Illinois CPA Society to submit recommendations to State of Illinois on How to improve State operations. Project completed by submission of detailed report to Governor resulting in adoption, at that time (1965) of most proposals.
