Eric McAfee

Mr. McAfee, 38, is a co-founder of Cagan McAfee Capital Partners, LLC, a venture firm focusing on mid-to-late stage and special situation investments in technology-related companies. In 1998, he co-founded Berg McAfee Companies, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm based in Cupertino, California that has invested in more than twenty companies. Previously, he founded McAfee Capital in 1996 to fund early stage venture opportunities.
In mid-2000, Mr. McAfee co-founded and became the chairman of CI Systems, a broadband wireless software and services company providing satellite-based two-way Internet and telecom services. Hughes Electronics is a key technology partner, with financing for the deployment of CISystems’ network monitoring, Virtual Private Network and backup connectivity enterprise solutions.
In 1999, Mr. McAfee co-founded and joined the board of MindArrow Systems (Nasdaq: ARRW), a publicly-held emarketing systems company with 100 employees, and became co-chairman in 2000. MindArrow has sixteen patents pending on its proprietary Virtual ProspectorTM software and network for the creation and delivery of eBrochuresTM. Customers include more than 100 major companies, including Intel, Hewlett Packard, Toyota, eGM, Nissan, Sony, BMG, Warner, Fox television, the NBA, George W. Bush, and entertainers Britney Spears, Hanson and N’Sync.
In 1998, Mr. McAfee co-founded and joined the board of NetStream, one of the first Internet Protocol-based local telephone companies using digital rather than analog switches. NetStream received $24 million of financing from Cisco Systems and $25 million of equity from the Union Bank of Switzerland.
In 1998, McAfee funded and joined the board of All Star Telecom, the leading fiber optics networking engineering/construction company in the Western US. As the only outside investment group, McAfee helped All Star grow from $14 million in 1998 to year 2000 revenues of $80 million and 450 employees. In 1999, All Star Telecom was sold for a significant gain to International Fibercom (Nasdaq: IFCI).
In 1996, McAfee co-founded and joined the board of Global Digital Technologies, a software company that now provides the San Jose Mercury News, Los Angeles Times and 200 other newspapers with enterprise software to interface legacy systems with Internet databases and websites. Large customers include the Knight-Ridder, Gannett and Tribune newspaper chains.
In 1992, Mr. McAfee co-founded PC-card manufacturer New Media Corporation, which grew to $48 million sales and 150 employees within three years and received $15 million of financing from AMP, Incorporated, a Fortune 50 company. New Media built a 25,000 sq. ft. production facility that shipped more than 20,000 units per month to customers including AT&T Wireless, Toshiba and AST Research.
From 1988 to 1992, Mr. McAfee served in various management roles while with McAfee Partners, an advisory firm that provided services to private and publicly-held turnaround and fast-growth companies. From 1986 to 1988, Mr. McAfee was an associate of John Dean and Barry Goldwater, Jr. in the Los Angeles leveraged buyout firm Western Mercantile.
In 1980, Mr. McAfee co-founded McAfee Farms, an owner and operator of organic apple and almond orchards in its McAfee Apple Gardens division (featured on the label of Odwalla apple juice). In July 2000, McAfee Farms launched Organic Pastures, the largest organic pasture-based mobile dairy operation in the U.S. on 400 acres near Fresno, California. Organic Pastures was recently featured on CNN as an example of advanced technology dairy operations.
Mr. McAfee has served since 1993 as a member of the Board of Directors of the California Manufacturers & Technology Association, one of the oldest and most influential business organizations in California with 500 members including Intel, Hewlett Packard, GM, Boeing, Northrup and Hughes Electronics. In 2000, Mr. McAfee was selected to serve as a member of the George W. Bush Information Technology National Advisory Committee.
Mr. McAfee serves or has served on the Boards of Directors of MindArrow Systems (rich media emarketing solutions - symbol: ARRW); mvion (enterprise wireless software); CustomerLink Systems (emarketing solutions for small and medium-sized businesses); Global Digital (Internet systems software for 200 newspapers); Verdisys (satellite private networks for energy industry); iCommerce (ecommerce software for customers including Dell Computer and Earthlink – Steve Wozniak also serves on the board); Quikview (candidate management systems for recruiters and HR managers); DataZone (mobile network storage); Intraop Medical (patented mobile radiotherapy device for cancer treatment – investment banker Bill Hambrecht and the former CEO of $2.5 billion Siemens Medical also serve on board); and DAC Intl (manufacturer of high-precision lathes for optical lenses and specialized applications).
A recipient of a Congressional Award in Washington, D.C. in 1985 for his volunteer work, in 1980 Mr. McAfee traveled for one year in Mexico and the US as the lead trumpet player for a cast of Up With People. Previously, he was elected President of the US delegation to the USSR for a five-week event attended by 5,000 students from 127 countries, with opening ceremonies held in the Kremlin in Moscow.
In 1986, Mr. McAfee earned a B.S. in Management (emphasis in Statistics) from Fresno State University. He received five awards upon graduation, including the Outstanding Undergraduate from the Alumni Association and the Business School Dean’s Medal, awarded to the outstanding business student. He is also a 1993 graduate of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program, and is a 2000 graduate of the Harvard Business School Private Equity course. |
