Summer Camp
Kids Invent! ™ Summer Camps
Kids Invent!™ is an innovative, non-resident Summer Camp held on the CSUF campus for kids with creative minds.
Kids Invent!™ camps were created by Ed Sobey, Ph.D., author of “Inventing Stuff,” a kid’s guide to inventing and creativity, and executive producer/host of “The Idea Factory,” a television show on science, technology and creativity for kids.
-
Camp participants learn about science, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
-
Students are taught about the invention process so they may continue to invent even after the conclusion of the Kids Invent! programs.
-
Participants learn to work as a team as they invent their toys.
-
Students learn to use their creativity to build skills that will make them successful in the future.
Grades 4-8
Toys Students design a toy, present their concepts to a “management team,” conduct market research at a local toy store, build and test their prototype, create display advertisements, build a World Wide Web page to promote their toys, write a short business plan, and display their final product at a public “Toy Fair." Videos In this one-week program kids learn how to shoot and edit their own digital video projects. First they learn basic photography and computer editing with individual projects for each new technique. By the end of the week they will know how to create titles, add sound and video effects, create split screens, and create different types of effects. Kids work individually and in groups to produce several videos, culminating in their own five- to ten-minute movie and a thirty second trailer.
Robots Starting with no background in robots, students work in teams to build several electric models before building robots. They design the base and cut it out of wood, add motors, a circuit board and components, and then figure out how to program it. By the end of the week their robots are using sensors and navigating mazes.
Advanced Robots This camp is for kids who have taken our basic robotics class and for those with LEGO or other robotics experience. Advanced Robotics takes them to the threshold of professional robots. Includes making robotic arms, external controls, and more.
Science Young scientists will see the world through a kaleidoscope they create. They launch rockets and make propeller-driven vehicles and solar inventions, while learning about the concepts of using sunlight and solar cells to generate electricity!
Grades 1-3 Choose EITHER morning or afternoon camp
Young Inventor Young inventors grow a mini garden and make geometric-shaped refrigerator art. They enjoy creating their own stone pet, writing a story about their pet and sharing it with the class. Students will put on a show with puppets and music instruments they make during camp.
